Oughterard, which is often referred to as the gateway to Connemara is located between the capital of the west, Galway City and Connemara. It is an ideal spot for touring the rugged and beautiful scenery of Connemara. Oughterard itself has many attractions including the Hill of Doon, an 18 hole golf course and the Glengowla Mines which are the only lead and silver mines in Ireland. Daily cruises of Lough Corrib are available from Oughterard where you can visit local attraction in Cong and Inchagoill Island. Aughnanure Castle which was built c 1500 by the O’Flahertys is a well preserved castle close to Lough Corrib where you can see many features of the old structure including the watch tower and banqueting hall. Oughterard is also the main fishing location in the west of Ireland with its proximity to Lough Corrib which is famous for its salmon and trout fishing. There are a large variety of top restaurants and pubs for your night entertainment with the usual traditional Irish music sessions nightly in most pubs. Events like the Oughterard Show and the Oughterard Regatta which takes place in Aug offers a variety of fun for the family with events of Tug Of War, Throwing The Sheaf, Irish Dancing and the Penalty Shoot Out while the kids will be kept entertained on the Bouncing Castles.
