Ballinasloe is located on the east coast of County Galway and is known as the Gateway to the west of Ireland. It is the second largest town in County Galway and lies on the River Suck which is a tributary of the River Shannon. Ballinasloe has its own marina where boating tourists can park their pleasure boats and sample the hospitality of the vibrant town which has a population of over 6500. Ballinasloe is well known for its fine limestone which has been used to build public buildings all over Ireland and Europe. Recently limestone from Ballinasloe was used to build the Civic Offices of the Galway County Council in Galway City. Every October over 100,000 visitors from all over the world roll into the town for the annual October Fair and pour over €3,000,000 into the local economy. The October Horse Fair dates back to the 1700s and is one of the oldest of its kind in Europe. Another popular event in Ballinasloe is An tSúca Fiain which is a festival that takes place every summer. Ballinasloe is a very progressive town with its own Hospital, Cathedral, manufacturing industry and educational facilities.
